Sometimes, one must find the need of a simple HTML editor, for example, when posting in a blog site. It can be very frustrating if one needs to compose the post in a complex layout. But editors such as
Dreamweaver or
Publisher will be an overshot. The following are some nice free HTML editors that can server this purpose, no need to say, for free.
- KompoZer(download) in Portable Applications from PortableApps.com is "portable" and has the most widely needed features. It also has a CSS editor, and publish features too.
- HTML-Kit needs installation, but have quite many interesting features. The latest version B300 needs registration.
- Alleycode maybe a well recognized HTML/XHTML editor, but it does not have preview mode, in which one can editor in a WYSIWYG mode. One has to use external browsers to check the result. Not portable neither. The libraries (list of tags) of HTML, CSS and PHP are nice though.
- Arachnophilia is a Careware and now has its latest version written in Java, which means that it can run virtually on any platform.
- Note Tab Light in Free Text Editors is also a handy HTML editor with libraries for efficient input of tags.
- Web Wiz Rich Text Editor is "a powerful WYSIWYG HTML Editor that can turn your sites textareas's into HTMLarea's with just 4 lines of code!!". So, it is not a stand alone editor that runs on your computer and editor your homepage codes.
- TwinEditor (download v2.1) is a nice WYSIWYG HTML editor that can display HTML code and the preview at the same time, with cursor synchronization, link check. It also supports external style sheet, and CSS2 (CSS level 2). But it does not support XHTML.
Iron Spider gives some nice reviews about some of the editors above.
