Dog Fighting

Dog fighting has always seemed to be remote to me. But surprisingly, it is reported to be gaining popularity in the United States, although it is considered to be felony offense. The hobby (if it can be called one) of betting on dog fighting must most be driven by the desire of money making, except for those who enjoying bloody and brutal fighting. There have never been any limit with human being's desires, which are also the origin of various kinds of crimes.

There has just been a report (日本語記事)in Japan about a father hiring people to kill his third son, just to collect huge amount of insurance money! There have been similar crimes in Japan. One of the most famous ones is the Wakayama curry poisoning (和歌山毒物カレー事件)by the suspect Masumi Hayashi, who has been sentenced death penalty and is appealing now. She allegedly put arsenic in curry during a local festival, leading to 4 casualties and 40 people hospitalized. It is also suspected that she had poisoned his husband, and to get insurance. The mass killing was linked to insurance too. But there are also a group appealing for Hayashi, and claims that she is innocent.
“We tend to forget that happiness doesn't come as a result of getting something we don't have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.”

Betting by letting dogs to fight for their life, or making money by killing pople are all greeds. We all have greed to cerntain extends. The bottom line is not to cause any troubles to others. How far one can stay above this bottom line depends on many factors, from living condition to law enforcement systems. One thing clear is that crimes in less development regions are mostly primitive ones, whereas those in developed regions are mostly more sophisticated ones.
Greed is generally defined as something negative in bible. Similar definations can be found in other religions. It would be interesting to see the crimes rate of different religions, among similar living environments. I suspect that they are similar. Just like the rate of car accidents remain the same, irregardless of the progress of safety technology.
Stop being greedy, happiness and satisfication will come naturally.
