Masuda, associate professor of Tsukuba University (筑波大学), has been arrested for sexually molesting (痴漢) a 21 year old lady in a train (日本語記事). It happened during his trip to Tokushima. The professor confessed that the lady is his type and he could not help but started touching and talking to her.
Kazuhide Uekusa (植草 秀), an ex-commentator and professor of Nagoya University of Commerce & Business, has been arrested twice for the same sexual molest.
It is amazing how bold people can get to achieve their personal goals, irregardless their professions. In common sense, it is unthinkable to molest others in a crowded train. It is true that Japanese tend to be shy and are refrained from protesting unless in a desperate situation. But it is deperate enough to be molested in a public place. And in a society where chikan (sexual molest) is condemned, it is safe enough to stand up and point out the prick. Still, even the professors, or government officials (e.g. NHK director) can risk their career, family life etc. to satisfy their own vulgar desires.
As despicable as chikan is, there are also reports about false charge of chikan (痴漢冤罪). Even for Prof. Uekusa, there are people in his defence (「植草一秀教授は無実だ」、検察が矛盾とわたしは見る). There is even an movie, "それでもボクはやっていない", about false charges of chikan. In fact, I always try to keep my hands in "clean" places when travel in trains, especially crowded ones.
There is a saying in Chinese: "害人之心不可有,防人之心不可無", one should never try to hurt others, but should never forget to prevent oneself from being hurt by others.
